Car Seat Types

As a parent one of your most important duties is to keep you child safe in your car. Children up to four years are required by all US states to be in a car seat. And many states also have laws about children older than four years. You must make sure to understand your state requirements.

In this article we will discuss the different types of car seats. Use this guide to pick one that is right for your child.

The first type of seat is the rear facing infant seat. This is what any newborn baby first travels in. Your baby must travel in this from birth to at least one year old or until he/she is twenty two pounds. These are designed to provide the maximum protection to your baby in the case of crash.

The next type is the convertible seat. These come in both rear facing and front facing models. These seats can usually carry babies or toddlers that weigh up to forty pounds. The nice thing about this is that if you buy a rear facing convertible, then you can use the same seat from birth until your baby reaches the weight limit for the seat. If you want to buy a front facing one then you will have to wait until your baby has reached at least twenty two pounds in weight.

These days you can also find what are called integrated travel systems. This is an all in one solution. They include a car seat, a base and a stroller. The seat fits into the base and into the stroller very nicely and is convenient to move your baby from the car to the stroller seamlessly.

The final type you should be aware of is the booster seat. This is used when your child reaches the weight limit of the convertible seat (usually about forty pounds). What this does in provide your child with the necessary height to be able to use the car's seat belts. A person has to be a certain height so that the car seat belt works as it is intended to work.
